How to Boot Linux from Nokia Mobile

December 20, 2008

If you want to impress your friends with a geeky deed, here’s an idea:

Copy your favourite Linux distribution to your mobile phone and every time you get access to a PC (presumably not yours) boot your personal OS from your mobile phone… Ensure that your desktop, settings and data are always with you.

Instructions:

  1. Take a Nokia phone (works excellent with E71) with 1+ Gb memory card and connect it with a USB cable to a Linux PC.
  2. Run the Nokia in mass storage mode which basically turns it into a conventional USB memory stick.
  3. Follow one of the many available online instructions how to boot Linux from a USB stick :)

Of course you could do the same with a regular USB stick instead of a mobile phone, but this would look far less techy ;)

Question, does that make your calling ability with your phone obsolete?

Your phone will continue working as usual, this method is using only phone’s storage space.
