CTIA Wireless 2010

I’ve just recovered from the long days (and nights) I had in Las Vegas during this year’s CTIA Wireless. It was really a good show but in my opinion it was not so impressive as Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Maybe because I saw almost all the same stuff or maybe the one that is only applicable to the US market. Anyway here are some of my impressions from the show.

1) Apple (iPhone) – $1.6 billion, Q3
2) Nokia – $1.1 billion, Q3
3) …

Apple launched their first phone ever two and a half years ago…
$0 to $1.6 billion/Q in profit in 9 quarters…

More Applications, More Services, More Traffic

Eric Schmidt, CEO, Google:

  • “Half of the new internet connections are from mobile devices.”
  • “The scale of smartphone is growing more than 30% YoY and in 3 years, if not sooner, smartphones will pass global PC sales.”

Gartner:

  • “By 2011, more than 50% of Fortune 500 companies will interact directly with their customers via mobile devices.”
  • “By 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide.”
  • “By 2014, there will be a 90% mobile penetration rate and 6.5 billion mobile connections.”
  • “Worldwide mobile application stores’ download revenue exceeded US$4.2 billion in 2009 and will grow to US$29.5 billion by the end of 2013.”
  • “Worldwide downloads in mobile application stores will surpass 21,6 billion annually in 2013 from 2,5 billion in 2009.”

Cisco:

  • “Globally, mobile data traffic will double every year through 2014 (108% CAGR), increasing 39 times between 2009 and 2014.”

… with such market it’s hard to find an excuse not to grow ;)
